- Scanned vehicle for codes. No codes were present. Checked charging system and all components passed. Checked voltage at starter and voltage was present, but vehicle did not crank. Replaced starter and the same issue occurred. Verified power and ground supplies and all supplies were good. Checked voltage drop across battery terminals and drop was less than 200mv. Used cables to provide a new ground path and no change. Put booster cables on the battery and the vehicle started every time. Removed cables and it wouldn't start. Installed a new battery and vehicle has started every time. Cell checked battery and the battery smelled of sulfur. Checked all cells and one of them was smoking when the caps were removed. Performed battery test again and even though test came back at 599 cca, the voltage dropped down to 1.4v on some tests, but not others. The original battery had an intermittent internal short.
